Another great submission on the Gbox mailbox. This time, all the way from France!
Say Hello to Cecilia, a young French photographer that has the power to revive what once were faithful animals.
Cecilia has recently produced her 1st book ever – Vous êtes des animaux – here’s a little synopsis about her work:
These animals died twice. The first time was presumably through some form of violence that happens all the time. But this is not an animal rights piece, and it’s the second death that interests me, anyway.
It took place over years, happening unnoticed—lack of attention killed the object created for us to see in wonderment. People stopped looking. When I encountered these creatures in empty rooms, it was as though they called out to be admired again. Not the dead animals, but the objects that artisans turned them into.
This is not a Luddite’s view of the world, but as digital screens have rendered these dead animals obsolete, it seemed appropriate to depict them using an old film camera. The results have produced imperfections that make you aware of yet another object: the photograph. I hope you will enjoy both and think about the hands that created each.
Now, for your delight, how about a little interview with Ceciliar? Yes?! OK. Your wish has been granted my friend:
Gbox: When are you launching your book? And how are you offering it to the public?
Cecilia: There is no official release of the book yet, because the pilot is hosted on a website that is not really an publishing company. So, until I found a physical publisher, blurb.com, that lets you self publish with little expense to start spreading my work.For now then the only means of dissemination of the work is from the website http://www.blurb.com/bookstore/detail/2186571 . And the next step is to find a small publisher who wants to collaborate!
Gbox: What made you create the book? How do you feel about it?
Cecilia: The project was born without really thinking about it. I quickly found a considerable photographic equipment that I started to edit without knowing what I’d do, then the search for linearity and anarration in publishing, and my obsession with objects naturally pushed me to make a book .For me photography is a way to have the things I see, collect them and it seems more appropriate to produce a book,so that the viewer has in turn what I caught.
This is the first time I’ve done a personal project, I’m glad to see that all the work has paid off, as I dreaded its reception because I put a lot of myself in this project. It feels very different to doing commissions.
Gbox: Are you an animal/nature lover?
Cecilia: I’m not particularly connected to animal rights or environmentalism. What interests me here is the object rather than the live animal. It is true that some pictures take up codes of wildlife photography but soon my vision takes over and you are left wondering what’s going on with these strange animals.
Gbox: Where do you get your inspiration from?
Cecilia: As I said above, I am fascinated by the objects and the concept of ownership., hence my love for film, negatives and paper copies …What inspires me is that we no longer look at abandoned places, places of passage, relics, religious icons, the accumulation too. At a time when he should have more pictures of this obsolescence is for me to have what others do not want, and do something else.
You may not know this but, this was one of Cecilia’s first interviews! She’s a natural, isn’t she?
I feel super happy to be able to help her spread the word about her work and – as I mentioned in previous posts – helping a new creative mind will give you good karma points, so go give her some love. Hey, who knows, if you ever travel to France you could even pop by and say hello to her in person! {unless you are a creep. If you are, then don’t do it…you creep}
Thank you Cecilia for submitting your work. I wish you the best of luck in your creative journey.
