Ha! Love getting the week started with a bit of humour, especially when it comes in the shape of art. Quirky art, of course.
These paintings by Shawn Huckins are hilaaar and amazing all at the same time. First of all, yes, you heard right, these are paintings! Replicas of the original to be exact – not photoshopped or digitally altered. Even the caption is painted by hand. So cray!
You may ask yourself, how can he get away with replicating someone else’s original art work and add some funny captions to it without getting in shit? Well, Shawn scouts artwork from the 18th and 19th century that is in the public domain, meaning, their copyright is long gone and can be used for any purpose.
And here’s another question, why would he want to deface these classic american paintings? Easy! To showcase a new kind of revolution taking place…in our phones! Shawn explains that technology is pretty much taking over the world right now, especially our smartphones which have become sort of a lifeline, a lifeline as in “oh shit! I didn’t instagram this!”. Literally, we are slaves in the ruthless ruling of these devices. So one must rebel against them!….or at least die trying (drama!).
Oh and listen to this gem of a quote taken from his site where he talks about his paintings: “if George could comment today, would he click the ‘like’ button, or post wtf? and then go check his Lady Gaga tweet?” Ha! You kills us, Shawn.
K, go check out more of his work (there’s tons!) over here. LATERZ. LOLS4EVA BTCHS.
