Oh man, I love this one.
These are the beautiful hand-stitched creations of Nicola De Jager, titled Calavera {or “skull” in Spanish.}
Traditionally, calaveras are part of the decorations used for Day of The Dead – a Mexican celebration of both, life and death. This is one of my favorite festivities – full of colour, food and joy. As kids we were taught that this celebration was created by our ancestors to mock death, as it is only a natural process and we shouldn’t be scared of it, if anything, we should live life at it’s fullest so we can enjoy afterlife with no regrets.
We would also create “ofrendas” {offerings} for visiting souls – such offerings would include favorite food and drinks from family members that passed away along with candles – so they could use the light to guide their way back into eternity.
Amazing, yes?
